CALM is an evidence-based suicide prevention training designed for clinical and non-clinical professionals. The training focuses on how to effectively counsel individuals at risk for suicide by reducing their access to lethal means, particularly firearms and medications, during periods of crisis. Through a combination of case studies, communication strategies, and practical tools, CALM equips providers to have compassionate, collaborative conversations about safety planning. The goal is to increase time and distance between the individual and lethal means, thereby reducing the risk of suicide and saving lives.
Course Objectives:
- Identify individuals for who lethal means counseling is appropriate
- Learn strategies for having conversations regarding the topic of lethal means
- Keep at-risk individuals safe by implementing the safe storage of firearms and medications
